The original 290 is sold. Guy got a good deal on that saw.

Now I've got a 290 with a generic 390 top end. And that saw runs way better than it should.

I have one of those too but it's a hyway top end. That's the power the 290 should have come with. It performs well. Either way I'll trade it for a nice 036 in a heart beat.

I wouldn’t take that trade, don’t know anyone that would! 029-039 is a home owner saw, 036 is a prosaw, no comparison.

The first 290 was 100% OEM, 150-155 lbs compression.

This one has a 390 farmertec top end, no idea on compression, currently being broke in.

They both run well and have good manners. Power wise I'd say that 390 farmertec has a slight advantage.

No muffler mods or anything else.

I did a muffler mod on mine. I know the 290 and 390 have a different muffler. I never ran mine before the muffler mod so Idk what it did for it but it runs real well with a 20 inch bar. Handles it like a champ.

How does it compare to the 028?

My 028 runs real good as well and it's just a bit behind.

They are pretty close in performance. I run a 16 inch bar on the 028 but there's not huge difference. The 290 will handle the 20 inch bar burried in wood and I don't think the 028 could do that. Under normal cutting conditions they are real close.

I've been running a lot of saws in that size lately and minus a few small things the performance is pretty close.

Cut many, many cords with an 029 Super with a *gasp* 25" blade! Never replaced anything but a fuel line on that saw. Did not realize it was a heavy, underpowered, excessively vibrating turd until I got a chance to run some better saws... ignorance is bliss, I suppose.

I think the 390 top end and a muffler mod is a must for that saw if you want to get the most out of it. In their plain form they are a decent reliable saw with all the down falls listed in the post above. They will get the job done time and time again. It had more power with a toasted piston than my husky 450.

I've read on AS that a 390 muffler modded and properly tuned is comparable to an 044. I haven't compared them myself because I don't buy 044s, don't like them after owning a couple of them..

I have not read that yet. I have no complaints about my 290/390 it's got the power it needs to pull the bar it wears. My 028 and 290 are my saws for cutting wood. I've never had any experiences with any of those bigger cc pro saws.

Something was wrong with the 450 then, with a 325 and an 18" they do great in wood up to 10-12". Would I rather run a pro saw sure, but the specs on a 450 are the same as a 353 which is also a great saw and a pro built saw as far as a mag case goes.

Never experienced that myself, ran an 039 yesterday, and although they are a good saw, doesn't compare to the 044/440's I've ran.
I did have a 310 that would do a great job spinning a 24", I sold it as I was afraid something was gonna go boom, the last I knew it was chugging right along.

I had always heard about these saws but never had the chance to get my hands on one.

The legend surrounding them was undeniable. Holy Grail.

When I saw it in person, I thought I may be dreaming. I was scared to even fire it up. Had that presence about it just sitting there.

Picked it up, good weight to it, man saw. Pulled on it, the compression was unreal, Thor would grunt trying to get one of these to spin up. A few pulls and she fires to life, oh that rumble. A few piss revs, yeah she means business.

Wind her up and drop it in some wood, drags me up to the log and keeps pulling, dog in and it keeps pulling. The entire forest was leaning in on this event and shaking, just knowing it was only a matter of time before they were next.

What size is that blade? 20 inch. Of course. The famous size, do they even make a different blade for this beast? Doubt it.

If I told you it took five minutes to lay that big Oak out, limbed and bucked. I'd be lying. Five minutes would have gave me time to lay that oak out and read the entirety of Moby ****. It was quick.

Shut her down with a big grin on my face knowing my life would never be the same.

And when you get a PROPER woods ported saw With a PROPER razor sharp chain now that will bring a smile to your face :blob2::blob2::blob2:

That was the day I first ran an Ms290.

Nothing wrong with the 450 it cuts great. I'm assuming the yellow stihl chain was the major difference in cutting. I think I still had an Oregon safety chain on the husky from home depot. The oiler blew up on the husky and I was going through chains like crazy so I wasn't spending a ton of money on chains until I finally found out what was wrong with the oiler. I fixed that right around the time I bought the 290. I run semi chisel non safety on it now with an adjustable oiler. It's a solid saw now. Since I rebuilt the stihl I don't run the husky much. I usually let the person helping my use it because it cuts pretty much anything I would let them cut.
