If the Saw has compression and the piston looks good buy it. Do a muffler mod, remove limiter caps on carb and retune. Great little saw.

I just sold one I picked up cheap. Unfortunately it also sold cheaper than I thought. Oh well. I was surprised how well it cut and ran after removing the catalytic chamber and limiters. Prefer it though with a 16"bar and not 18". Id get another to fool with if it was available.

You need to have the bar nuts at least finger tight before using the tensioner or it will destroy the gears. Parts were pretty expensive imo.

I have one and it's light extremely reliable and fuel efficient. Have a skip tooth low profile 16" b+chain on it and it cuts okay. I'm not blown away by the power but it's not modded either, I like how quiet it is and use it when I'm around a lot of people.

I bought one dirt cheap with a burnt up chain brake. Replaced it and gutted the muffler and that guy ripped with a 16” bar. I sold it and a 590 echo together to fund an 084 purchase, which I’d do again but I really liked both those saws a lot. I’d pop on a clean one for $100

Well left the pawnshop today with the cs400 got it out of there for 70 bucks starts right up brought it home and tried it out before I cleaned it up and cuts wonderful can’t beat that for 70dollars
Is that Pottsville, PA? I’ll give you $80.

If it’s anything like the old 400EVL it’ll go forever. I’ve got a 1988 CS400EVLP which still gets weekly use, has a big hole punched in the muffler and hauls a 16” through almost anything. Gets as much use as my Cs590 and MS661, I’ll be surprised if either of them is still going in 30 years. 19291C46-C084-4E74-A2A3-C222A4734E7C.jpeg

Seeing a cs400 listed locally for a good price and wondering if it's a metal case or plastic. Searches on specs have not told me anything.

Anyone know the answer on that?
