I would like to start cutting bases and possibly the squish in time and I was wondering what make and model lathe is best suited for this work. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
Try Grizzly ... 8x16 works for me at $1250 new - have decked cylinders from 241c up to 660’s no problem with it ... make sure to get the tooling with it alsoI would like to start cutting bases and possibly the squish in time and I was wondering what make and model lathe is best suited for this work. That’s a sweet set up at a great price. Just not sure if you would have the clearance to swing a jug plus it’s a 3 jaw. Still a very nice set up.I would look around for a used one before I purchased a new one.I got this one for $200.View attachment 693329
I can assure you those combo units don't go for less than $1500 around here, and are usually well north of $2000.That’s a sweet set up at a great price. Just not sure if you would have the clearance to swing a jug plus it’s a 3 jaw. Still a very nice set up.
There's enough clearance for a 372 cylinder. I looked for a long time before this one came around. I think these are around $1800 at Northern Tool. That’s a sweet set up at a great price. Just not sure if you would have the clearance to swing a jug plus it’s a 3 jaw. Still a very nice set up.

Cont .... also there’s a kit available from this retired toolmaker , bolt - on , CNC with stepper motors
Yah , it’s about 3g for a turnkey CNC lathe setup ... granted you’re not going to be able to take .100 passes but she moves right along for a hobby CNC lathe ... I’ve gotten .0002-.0005 accuracy with proper set-up and light finishing passes —which should be more than sufficient for mostNice lathe
We are near eachother. I have been looking at that lathes and recall seeing this one out near Rochester I believe. I've been looking at everything in NY lol. I'm hoping to spend $1000 or less and really want a nice little bench top Southbend Atlas, Rockwell or Hardinge. Finding one not beat, single phase, has 3 and 4 jaw chucks and tools in that price range is challenging. I'm happy I found this thread because I wasn't sure how large of a swing I needed. There is a Logan 210 for sale locally asking $600 has 3 and 4 jaw chucks.View attachment 693482
They are nice. And parts are available and a huge followingI'm currently infatuated with this one but its $700 more than I want to spend.
