You did not mention the make / model if saw (did I miss it?) or your mechanical skills.

Replace the carb, fuel filter, air filter, and all lines; take them as uninstalled parts. Rise the fuel tank with alcohol and vent. Pull the spark plug and turn it over several times, venting with compressed air. Get the parts dealer to sign off.

Or just buy a new saw.

Or go electric!

Things should not have to be so complicated. I wonder is STIHL or Husqvarna have formal purging procedures for shipping saws; not the first time this issue has come up

Good luck.

It's a STIHL MS 250. Doing all that probably not within my time frame at this point, and with new parts and all the effort it might make more sense to buy something cheap over there. Thanks though. That seems like a thorough way to get it done, plus triple bagging and putting the detergent in there as was also suggested. I'm sure i'll miss my STIHL since i have a good part of 2 acres to work on. Not clearing all of it but a good amount.

Only draw back might be the time frame. I have a new Makita 9010 coming from Greece and it’s just shy of 3 weeks and it’s not here yet.
Yeah, I'd be on the way back by the time it got there.

Any suggestions on cheap saws from Home Depot? Even if it doesn't last long, if i could get through a weeks worth of heavy use without missing my STIHL too much, i'd be a happy camper. Literally.

A STIHL MS 250 is a good consumer saw. But not worth all the effort described.

Home Depot selection varies by location. Around here, the ECHO CS450 is the best saw on their shelves, but you can special order any of the Makita / Dolmar PRO saws.

Based on your comments, I would buy a new STIHL MS250 or 251 here, then sell it in Hawaii, or USPS it back; or call a STIHL dealer in Hawaii and set something up.

You like that saw, and you do not want a cheap one to die on you halfway through your project.

I work at an airport and asked the TSA last year about this, as I wanted to take a saw internationally. Was told that it was pretty much a no go, if it had ever been fueled. No way to guarantee that all the fuel could be removed. Basically was told that completely disassembled, or a new saw in an unopened box would be the only way it would be permitted.
There’s a glass showcase in our main terminal, of some items that have been confiscated over the years, and a chainsaw is one of those items.

TSA was pretty cool about it when I asked, maybe because i work at the airport too, but was firm that there’s no wiggle room there. No exceptions.

How big are your trees? An MS 170 isn’t much more than $200. It’ll cost you that just to ship one to Hawaii.
I'm not going to be cutting any of the bigger ones. Not much that i can't get my arms all the way around. Just a lot of stuff around 2ft diameter and smaller.
I looked at the 170 when i bought mine. Is it just a smaller version or is it more light duty?

We seemed to do what we wanted in Rose's Beaver. The gear of 7 Fallers was no problem what so ever. Her Beaver could take any wheather.

Pretty sure she was commetcial.

farther n you go, more likely they are to bend/break rules. beaver pilots get r done.
prolly hauled yer fuel/mix for beer $$$.

If you can find a Home Depot, Echo 400@$299 or Echo 490@$349. Just rich them up. The 490 can be muff mod, limiter caps removed and retuned in under 30 minutes. The 490 is the easiest muff mod ever.

For the price of the 490 i'm only $30 shy of a new MS 250. I'll check out the Echo 400. I was hoping to stay under $300.
