I also keep a container of gun oil to lube the spinner and the preset rivet. Been through several 100' roles and still have half a container left. You don't make a mess. I can tell you from experience wd40 does not work well , you will wipe out your spinner bit really fast!!

Many newer chains also have different 'Right' and 'Left' tie straps - usually part of their reduced vibration or 'comfort' features. Hard to tell them apart - usually a clipped heel at the rear. Not sure if it makes a big difference, especially if it is just one. But I have seen several tie straps inside out or upside down.

I needed to lengthen a 72dl lgx to 84. All I had was stihl RS. All I can say is it cuts well!! I use Lucas oil stabilizer for the spinner since I have it in a pump oiler handy. I did put a tiestrap on upside down once....... That don't work well at all!
Has either Oregon or Stihl chain changed? as the last time I tried to mix the two the Stihl presets were to large for the hole in the Oregon drive link & tother way around it was like the proverbial in the top hat. Mind that was 3/8x 050 Lo Pro, is the std 3/8 size the same dia holes etc. We only use Stihl chain in std 3/8 so have not worked on LGX

I'm yet to find a standard 3/8" chain that doesn't take the same presets. Stihl, Oregon, Carlton, Windsor, the newer Husqvarna chain, GB EVO, plus other Chinese chains all take the same presets in std 3/8". I have had issues with Windsor 3/8" presets fitting in chain but they had issues even in the Windsor chain they came with.
As far as 3/8"LP goes the Stihl LP chain does take a different preset and isn't interchangable with others.
It's the same for Stihl's .404" chain. The older Windsor took the same preset as Stihl but neither were interchangable at the time with Oregon or Carlton (or Chinese .404").
The newer Windsor "may" have changed now that it's coming out of the same factory as Oregon.

Twice that I had heard of from Oregon employees, they had to stop shipment and unpackage, which alone took a day, as the chain was wrong and had to be tossed or redone. I have no idea why it was caught so late in the process, but glad it was. Expensive error.

MCW Thanks for that info as I said I have had no experience cannibalizing std size 3/8 chains. I just joggled the grey matter & the fact the Stihl Rep saying that only same name brand presets would fit. Possibly brand brain washing he has more than likely had the company implant ;)

No worries for that info. It has taken years to work all of that out and in all honesty I've even chased down certain chain brands in the past just to check for myself.
Stihl will quite often say stupid things like what you've said. That is why a lot of homeowner Stihl guys assume that only Stihl chain will fit their Stihl saws. I see this a lot.

I have a heap of Stihl 3/8" presets/tie straps here that I've been using across all makes of 3/8" chain for over 12 months now. In my book Carlton and Stihl make the nicest presets to use. The Windsor presets also cracked a lot when spinning them up and seemed soft. I do like the older Windsor chain however - their 63A semi chisel is the best semi chisel chain I've ever used.

That is one of the reasons we now only use Stihl chains in 3/8 Std size, since Blount snorted up Carlton, Windsor, as the main two + other lesser names, Sarp etc. the quality seems to in some cases gone downhill. I agree the old Windsor chain was very good chain ( one problem nowadays is unless you do a LOT of searching) it is often very difficult to know WHO manufactures WHAT & when livings depend on it, buying a goodly amount of chain that turns out to be not as good, or total crap, is a bit of a no no

A while back I bought some 'new-old-stock' (NOS), .325 narrow kerf chain off of eBay. Went to use one loop at a GTG and mounted the chain backwards. DUH!

So I took off the bar and mounted it the other way. But it was still backwards!?! Closer inspection revealed why it was 'NOS' - apparently, the shop had pieced the loop together (not a factory package) and put in one section backwards. So it sat on the shelf until the shop closed and somebody posted it on eBay (all of the other loops were fine).

Fixed it at home - was still a good deal, even with the additional pre-sets, just a bit inconvenient to discover out in the field.

Long time ago @workshop visited here and pointed out the chain on a display saw was wonky. A full chisel was lengthened by eight cutters with a section of chipper. Backwards. [emoji23]

I know I have saved countless wads of monies having my spinner breaker sets, making new chains off the roll saves some but when I can buy once used chains from rental stores for a couple bucks each, then resizing them really paid off. One place had 63 Stihl RSC 64 DL chains that I converted into 72 DL chains for my 20" bars, only takes 5 -7 mins to break and mend a chain, cost $2.50 out of pocket for a chain then selling for $37. + - a loop. Around 90% of them hardly needed any filing but a few had some chips or damage that needed more.

I made a chain the wrong length once, but I’ve never mounted the chain backwards and put the saw away/ran it, and I’ve never mis-spun a chain. I just jinxed myself, but I’ll still say it! I have seen a bent chain, though. It confused me when I went to mount it, but I just shrugged, cinched out down, and ran the p!ss out of it. That mostly straightened it out, but I still wonder how it got bent.
