Hi guys, picked up this 4-30A today. I probably paid too much but these don't show up around here often and other than the peeling paint, this one seems to be in relatively good, complete shape.
Someone want to give me a crash course in these saws? I know nothing about them and it is much different than anything else I've ever worked on. I was told it ran about a year ago, the fuel tank is empty and clean and does not stink of bad gas so there is hope lol.

I can't even get a hiccup out of this thing.
Found the points box full of oil, which seems strange??? So I cleaned the points really welland seem to have good spark at the plug but it just keeps soaking the plug. I'm thinking the carbs metering is just stuck wide open.
I just read that there is a fuel shutoff valve so gonna go back out and see if it will fire with the fuel shut off. I haven't put a compression gauge on it but it feels strong enough to at least do something.

Well, I got it running lol. Note to self,.......the condenser needs to be grounded. Now I need to figure out how to tune this weird carb. Idle speed is all the way up and it still won't idle, seems pig rich and I can't turn the screw that I think is idle mixture lol. It runs well enough that I don't think I want to take it apart but we shall see.
Video to follow.

Anyone know what the difference is between the 4-30 and the 4-30A?

I tried my best to sharpen the old chipper chain and took it out and made a cut with it. I got it tuned pretty well but the chain is in bad shape. I don't have a proper file here for the big Ole 1/2 inch chain and have no idea what the rakers should be set at.
Anyone have a source for 1/2 inch chain? Or a way to convert this to .404??
Also need to figure out the primer if anyone has any info.

1/4 " Oregon file and don't tip your hand, and stay at about 30°.

The 4-30A was just a later version of the 4-30. I don't know what changes they incorporated in the "A".

You need a 1/4" file to sharpen 1/2" pitch chain. I normally set the depth gauge around 0.040 - 0.050".

Look at the owners manual and the IPL, I think you can see the primer well illustrated. You will likely need to get brave and take your apart to see what parts are needed.

I just ordered the proper file. do they even make a depth gauge that big? lol I am not holding out a lot of hope for this chain. it looks like it was used to cut rocks lol.

customchainsawparts normally has the .404 8 tooth sprockets for the McCulloch gear drive saws, I think they're around $28 these days. NPA (Norman Prince Associates) used to have 0.030, 0.035, 0.040, and 0.045" depth gauge guides. You can always lay a straight edge on the chain (I use a piece of 3/8" square key stock) and use a feeler gauge to check the distance.
