2023 garden season

We are facing the exact thing here!! Lookin like a lean harvest year for most of us! Our berry harvest was 1/4 of normal and now I just what to keep the plants alive. Got lots of new runners going IF I can haul enough water to them!
Spinach gave us 1 good picking before the 90* heat hit us here.
The onions look the best but will be small this year, usually have 1 to 2 pounders on the average but not this year!

String Bean seeds - planted April 16
Silver queen seeds - planted May 14 (3 weeks ago)
Never planted the garden this early as I'm usually behind. First pick shows some getting grassy so I hooked up the jackass to the push plow. Watermelons and a couple cantaloupe under the ground cover. I grew a 75 pounder a few years ago and saved the seeds so planted a couple hills. I didn't save the seeds from the 61 pounder but here's that one next to a regular Charleston Grey melon.

That is one huge water melon! I don't like melon but my wife does. She can get it and split it with the chickens, they go crazy for that.

So far so good for us. Everything is healthy but the rhubarb from her mom lost a few leaves from the transplant but has healthy new shoots. Green beans are ok, nothing eating them like last year. I did put 4 small jars with Irish spring in with them. Keeping an eye out for potato beetles.

the onions are getting nice size now. been carrying water for a week to the gardens. 4.5 acres sucks when you gotta use a 3 gallon sprinkler can!
Calla lilies starting to bloom too.

Peppers all officially moved into the greenhouse this evening! Probably need to transplant soon I believe, they are in 3.5” pots now, any recommendations on what size pot to go to next?

When you expect last frost/transplanting? They should be fine in those pots if you keep them watered. If they are rootbound a bit score the roots when you put them in the ground.

Plants in Newfoundland? That's zones 4-5, Labrador is another story........

I'm zone 5.

So if annyone can help me annswer a few quiestion, our peppers are also only 6” tall at the moment, is this normal to see at this stage in growth? I don’t know how old they are exactly, but I read somewhere that they should be topped soon?

Mine are the same but a little taller. You can let the fruit grow but then plants put energy into fruit (think screwing/reproduce) rather than grow. I usually pinch off the fruits not the top. On a few plants let them go for an early crop, rest I pinch and plants will grow while forming new blossoms

At the risk of losing fruit I wouldn't top them. Maybe a bigger pot til you plant them outside. ?? They love fertilizer and water when they set fruit. The deer topped a few of mine and not sure when /if they will get anything on.

Couldn't edit my post. As @Mad Professor said maybe pinch 1 or 2 peppers off of the plants to help them grow a bit bigger.

On a few plants let them go for an early crop, rest I pinch and plants will grow while forming new blossoms

It tends to get super duper windy here by the ocean so I was hoping they would be fine in there like most of our stuff, also our tomatoes and and peas for sure I was hoping

Not to jump on FS toes.......Big pots will work, I had plants I had in the garden over the summer and produced great. I put them in large pots before killing frost and they lived inside overwinter. Early Feb the blossomed and had early peppers.

Some I kept for ~ 4 years, they got woody like a shrub. One fall I had them out on the deck and was away, lost them to a frost.

This is first fall out of garden pics. Don't have pictures when they got to be bushes

Wow! 4 years eh?! Never knew they could grow that long!
I was planning on putting them in 3 gallon pots and leaving them in the greenhouse the whole time over the summer, this is our first time growing our own so it’s all a learning experience right now to us, and any help is muchly appreciated from anyone who shares!!
