Scrounging Firewood (and other stuff)

I'm normally not one to make generalizations about generations, but there is something up with the kids now. I don't understand not wanting to drive...even before I had a DL and a truck, I was riding around on a minibike to visit friends, etc. It was all about the freedom to travel for me.

I've got some friends that are now dealing with having kids in that age range. No inclination to drive, they seem to be one of the least rebellious generations yet...they have no problem just going places with mom and dad. I ride dirtbikes with some of those dads, their kids won't ride...not because of a genuine lack of interest, but rather because they will not get out of their comfort zone. One of them, a 16yo boy, told me that it's too scary to learn to drive and/or ride.

Not all is lost, a couple of my friends do have kids that ride. Those kids are the exact opposite, they live to ride and are now excited to start driving as well. These kids are "fearless" like I'd expect teens to be, they've grown up wearing casts, etc. The only thing I've noticed different, is the country kids around here are the more traditional "free-spirited" kids. My buddies that live down in the valley/towns are the ones with the soft kids.

Agreed, we wanted the freedom of driving ASAP!

I think part of it is now you are connected with technology even when you are apart....easier to send filtered pics from your bedroom than it is to get dressed up and go out.

A couple more loads, plus I split and stacked some oak that was already laying next to the stack. But it's warm, and now apparently I need to check what's wrong with the dryer after it made a "pop" sound. At least that's in the air conditioned house.

Dated this girl, Kelly, little before I met my wife. Never had a licens and had zero intention of getting it. She lived up on the back side if Harrisburg and either took a cab, bus or walked just about everywhere she had to go. Even when she was in collage she would bum rides off friends or her parents would shuttle her around. Never understood it.

To paraphrase Harry... A gals got to know her limitations. She apparently did!

I absolutely love the dryness in these comments. I totally understand.

My cousin who is now 19 does not drive and probably never will. She is an extremely beautiful girl with ZERO self esteem. Seems to only date complete duds and most of her friends are not very savory either. Unless my aunt/uncle, her siblings, a friend, or her flavor of the day will drive she is always at home.

It is what it is. Her boyfriend is Steven Hawking smart, but also blind as a bat. He doesn't drive either.

I managed to fix the Tacoma evap system . After 3 gas caps got one that sealed . Ended up getting an OEM one in the end but the computer reset and was able to get the inspection done.

Last evening, it was time to trim some trees,

Then today it was off to my second story room, everyone calls my "treehouse", to do some eve extension, and YES it was hot today!

I wanted the eve to cover my stairs, so we got-r-done!

I love the view from the "treehouse",

I'll add a bit of bracing under that eve later...

I got all of the logs off the big trailer, cut them into rounds, and even managed to do one wheelbarrow load to the stacks.

This is what you have leftover when logs have been sitting waiting on you for a year and are loaded with a grapple bucket.

Then I went inside and finished putting the dryer back together with my upgraded idler bushing design. The noise it had been making finally identified itself to be repaired. And now it's time for just rewards.

Maybe you've gotten used to seeing pictures of the little stumps you've been pulling .
It was about 32 where I flush cut it, but the top of that if it was left in the ground would have been at least 4' in the air, and there were roots sticking up around 7'.
When I cut from both sides down into the root flare, it was quickly more than a 24 would reach from both sides.
It is a good sized stump.

I have ground down at least 75 stumps on our property since buying my stump grinder. The smallest being around 5 inches and the largest being close to 36 inches at ground level that didn't include the above ground exposed roots that went out 8 - 10 feet. I'm no newby at this. Yes your stump was huge.

Oh, for sure there are easier ways. The four wheeler/trailer and tractor bucket are both less labor intensive. But this is my PT and exercise program. And I've even peeled a few pounds to get ready for basketball. I'm going to need all of the advantages I can muster - age and my artificial knee will catch up to me someday. But not today!

I resemble that bionic knee. I have one myself that I got after a surgeon screwed it up. To be honest it has not slowed me down at all.

Last year I got a bunch of locust, been cut and split for about 8 months now. Probably won't be till next year till I can burn it, if not 2025 burn season. I love it but man it takes forever to dry.

Never heard that about locust before, especially black locust. If you cut it in feb/march before the ground thaws and it's split in the spring it's ready to go in the fall.
I was thinking of you last night, saw a nice tdi that was lowered(although a bit lower than I'd like). How's yours coming

That's sweet. Probably about the same size as the one I was dealing with. What I know is the Kubota was/is a bit small and under powered for the task, but it got it done.

It has only been almost 20 years that I have wanted to do this on our logging road. I still need to put in the hinge pins and latch assembly this afternoon. I have been blocking this road with 2 big boulders. Now I need to get rid of the boulders.
