I have done several that way with vise grips. Kind of a pain but it worked for me. After seeing the tool Lakeside and Ultra posted I now have a use for the broken screwdrivers in my garage besides turning them into scratch awls.
Another shadetree technique is to just hook it on the right side like andy mentioned and then stick a flat blade screwdriver into the last coil on the left and pull it onto the pin. If your careful, you won't distort the spring at all.

That's what needle nose ViseGrips are for:)

Spend the $4 and be safe. And you no doubt found, clutch spring on an 084 and 045 are a little tougher than on an 017 ;)

Yep... I started where Brad was... lack of tools masked by bridled enthusiam... then I found.. there's an easier way...

Oh.. I only bought the little crank sleeves after I wrecked my $19 088 seal!

I fired her up today. No bar yet, so no WOT carb setting yet. It idles good and has good throttle response.

They say confession is good for the sole? I left the impulse line unhooked from the saw:confused: I don't know how, but a dry rebuilt carb fired up and ran despite the line being unhooked. It just wouldn't idle very low. It blew an oily mess all over the front of the tank. So I pulled it apart and cleaned it up realy good. No biggy, just a little reminder for everyone.

The saw is not finished. I borrowed the starter and handle from my other 084. I'm also still waiting on several new screws. Some old ones filled their places temporarily. The filter base nuts are still on backorder too.

Here I'm installing the carb. This is a HT-7A. It is the latest version used on the 084 and is the only one that compensates for air filter cleanliness.

Time for a question. Is this a Stihl handle or aftermarket? I want a full-wrap handle on it, but this one would require hacking up my new bar cover. I might be willing to do that if this is an OEM setup. I like the double-stacked tubes on the bottom. That would elevate the bottom of the case and help keep it from getting chewed up:rolleyes:
