I took my buddy's to 13,500, but it had a 24" bar. But it's ok to take it to 14,000. I figured I'd keep my buddy's a little low with that longer bar on it. Now if it had a 18" like it is supposed to I would have taken it to 14,000 or above.:greenchainsaw:

Basic setup on a 361 is 14,000 rpms. With a decent muffler mod I'd expect it to get up to 14,300 -14,500 rpms. That is with an 18-20" bar.

I been wonderin about muffler mods. This may be a stupid question, but did the mod you done make a very noticable difference in power?I like the 361 cause its quiet,is your saw super loud now?Any chance of doin any harm to the engine? Thanks for any info.
I does cut faster it is louder . no damage if you adjust carb right.

It idles fine runs real good . The hole is about one inch or so. I opend the hole on the back of the mufffler as far as icould with out goin beyond what the deflector could handle. This is the only port

A 1" hole is considerable larger than recommended for a 361. Does it idle properly now?

I did the mod to my buddy's with dual half inch copper pipes, walker style. And it idled perfect, cut time dropped prolly 30-35%.:rockn: :D ;) :chainsawguy:

Two 1/2" ID pipes is much less area than one 1" ID hole. Two 1/2" pipes is probably real close to ideal without measuring the exhaust port. The area of one 1" ID pipe is 0.7854. The area of two 1/2" ID pipes is only 0.3927 combined, close to only half of the 1" pipe. If you take the time to measure the exhaust port at the cylinder wall and calculate by 125%, you'll see that a 1" pipe is larger than desired. You may not be big enough to cause idle problems, but you're likely burning unnecesary fuel. Muffler modding isn't about just drilling holes at random in the muffler. There is some calculating involved if you want to do it right.

OK...gotcha.............. :chainsawguy: :D :rockn:

Measuring the exhaust port is easy. Take some uncooked spaqhetti and stik it in the exhaust port until no more will fit. Your goal is to measure the area of the port and not the exhaust flange. Multiply the area of the exhaust port by 125%, 150% max.

Would the same mod be good for an 036 pro? I gotta clean one on eflay (they can skinya alive) an I putta 18"bar on it for screamin'. Wood two 1/2" copper pipes comin' straight outta the front cover about 2 inches long be right? Is there any way to attach the copper without welding, or could it be somehow swaged on? I wanna flare out and angle cut the pipes like a Harley

Hey I got 200 posts already. Dang that didnt take long

You could do it like this.....this is my buddy's 361 that I did.........

not sure why you bother to have a muffler!

Only for posing... front pipes angled or not burn big wood... and 2 inch? you'll bust them off.

nope

DID YOU GUT THE MUFFER ISTHE STOCK PORT STILLTHERE?

I didn't gut the muffler, as the stock baffle has enough holes to equal 80% of the exhaust port, as andy will tell you. And the stock outlet is still there.:greenchainsaw: :chainsaw:

Does anybody know of available dyno data to show the effects of a muffler modification, or just a ballpark estimation of what one could stand to gain in hp or torque in a given saw?

Inquiring minds (and me) want to know!
