What saw should i get?

I am going to be needing a saw for sme heavy firewood cutting, mostly large oaks. I don't care what brand of saw i get, whether husky or stihl. I cannot afford a brand new saw, but a nice used one would be fine. What are your thoughts on some fairly heavy duty saws? thanks.

Look for something in the 044/440 Stihl size or a 372 Husky. Both are excellent saws and can comfortably pull a 28" bar if need be.

Sawinredneck, would be the best one to ask.

How much do you want to spend, how big are you cutting, and how often?

I probably will be cutting every weekend for a while, some wood upward of 30 inches, maybe more. I am willing to spend around 400 or so.

I have an 032 STIHL and think it's great.
Watch your local papers, or maybe you can ask a local dealer,
to watch out for you. Then use all the info you can get from here to make your decision.

the only problem with the 032 is lack of parts availability through stihl. i guess it depends on how much he wants to have to order from other souces.

I love my husky 372xp anything smaller and you get out of
their professional saws but that is my opinion im looking to buy
a 3120 but if you cant afford a pro model you might look at
echo they make good affordable power! sorry im just not a
stihl fan husky turns faster rpm gets done faster is what it
means to me . also its simple dosent have that bs choke switch
combo some people like them and they make a good saw but
i will stick with dawgs till they stop making great saws

Let me get this right, you are saying husky doesn't make any pro saws below the 372? :crazy1:

A 372xp or 365 would handle those tasks with relative ease.

There isn't a tree in Arkansas that you can't take down comfortably with a 395...or your 372 with a bit of thinking applied. I own a 3120 and an 066, and outside of milling, the 066 is the one I reach for...because I don't have a 372/046/7900 to grab first. There is an 8 lb differential between a 395/066 and a 3120. At the end of the day, it will feel like 80. You want a Husky, you want a 395. Big enough to brag about, big enough to get the job done.

Glad he's a Husqvarna fan.:hmm3grin2orange: Especially since Husqvana doesn't make any Pro saws below the 372xp. I guess anything below a Stihl MS660 is homeowner grade too.

Oh well... guess I'll sell all my stuff and head down to the Wal-Mart where the "real" saws are sold.:welcome:

i agree on the 395.

not many people need anything bigger outside the west coast.i have used both and i think the 395 cuts faster and i KNOW it is lighter.

Gary, could I borrow your Hotsaw for a bit of limbing. The 3120 is a bit light on power for me anymore....would that be considered a "pro" saw?

No problem dude... shipping weight will be around 450 pounds. You will need some 5/16" files for the 3/4" race chain that it has on it. Don't worry about the rakers... they are pretty low, and hungry.
