that is not a trick of the camera the 2 brite spots really look just about like that , it's where the ring peices smashed the transfers

sorry about the bluryness of this one but the crank case is in very good condition. ( it is very hard to hold still for the slow shutter speeds of low light photography)

I forgot to take a pic but the rod bearing was toast also didn't even find a cage just a bunch of beat up needles. The only thing I can think of is that it must have been plastic and been mixed with the trash that was in the muffler. This thing was very hot at some point everything in it has scoarch marks on it, the cylinder seems to be out of round and well you saw the pics of the piston. ( if not check them out they are worth it)
this is going to be a fun rebuild. thanks again to scooterbum you are the man.
hopefully we can find the parts for this thing and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I would really love to see this onld monster running again.

Left to right. My friend Dan, my uncle Amiel, And that's me on the right (Brian) note the blue pen in my pocket that is why the model number on the carb is so clear. I just colored between the lines.

I know how much you guys like pics so I have tried to be as thourow (spl?) as I can. ( i can fix just about anything I set my mind to as long as grammer and spelling ain't what's wrong with it LOL)

the bar cover is missing andother part I need to find. I'm not sure which modle saw this is. If anyone has an idea please feal free to post. I am going to do some research tonight but right now I think it time for bed .
thanks in advance for all your help guys I may not be on for a day or 2.

I think this might be a xl 901 not sure but the measurements are leaning towards a 901. going to see if I can narrow it down a little farther with this nifty lttle mannual disc that was given to me. Steve you are the man !!!!

well the measurements seam to be the same as a 901. I can't read the part number on the cylinder in the pdf but the meawsurements are exactly what I am comming up with 2" piston and 2 1/16" bore. well everyone have a great day time for me to go to my real job

Looks like a super xl, redcase with a blue case starter cover! Homelites were like chevy`s back then.....swap em out change em up & go cut wood!

Good Luck!

LXT.............

Looking good, Keith. Looks like you have a real project on your hands. It's nice to see an old saw being restored.

The spelling part is easy: down below the reply box, right next to the "Submit Reply" button is a "Spell Check" button that works pretty good.

Regards,
-Steve

I think I put this thread in the wrong forum probly should be in chainsaw forum. Does anyone know how to move it or should I start another thread there and abandon this one?

Your pics remind me of when I was first thinking about getting a "real saw" while I was still in Michigan. I came across a character who collected saws from farm auctions, cleaned them up, and then put them, and I am not kidding, in a big PILE of saws in his garage in a suburban neighborhood outside of Detroit, and then had a listing for "chainsaws" on CL. Most of them were pre-chain brake saws, and your photo of the light blue Homelite reminded me of one of the ones he had.

He liked the old saws becuase they had reed valves in the carbs, and manual oilers, and no chain brakes. He did not collect Stihl's or Husky's, but just about everything else, and some pretty darn large saws with huge bars, but definitely on the edge of antiques. I didn't buy one from him, though I wish I had more time just to look at all the various McCulloch's and Homelites and Wards and you-name-it that he had. Did not appear to be interested in any cosmetic appearance, just functionality.

I'm not sure how far this one is going to get I'm not going to dump a pile of money in it but If i can find the parts I need cheap this old fart will cut wood again
