I also had a friend of mine send me an article about this, forgot the source, that made it sound like we had huge oil reserves under our own American feet and the gov'mint was covering it up as a conspiracy (same guys that arranged to have JFK shot, probably).
So I talked to some colleagues of mine in our Detroit office (automotive business -fuel systems), one of whose friends is a geologist.
That geogist forwaded him some links to articles that put a much more rational light on the whole deal - YES, there is probably a bunch of oil in shale in the upper midwest. MAYBE much of it is recoverable. NO, it is not going to rain oil on us like manna from Heaven and save us from being slaves to OPEC.
