I am fixing a 038AV Mag with a broken crankshaft (yes, the clutch side literally broken off) and broken brake band. I bought one 038 (I believe) parts saw and one 038AV case/engine off ebay. With some new parts that I will need to buy, I am hoping to put together two good saws from all these parts.

Questions. What are the differences among the different 038 models? This 038 doesn't have brake mechanism. Was it taken off or some early models don't have brakes? See pics.

Older handles are metal while newer ones are plastic?

The carbs are different? I see them as Tillotson and could not make out the markings on them. The workshop manual stated two different carb kits for Tillotson (1119 007 1060 and 1119 007 1065). One is described as large. In the IPL, I see only Bings. I am trying to find the right carb kits to rebuild the carbs.

The cylinder for 038 Mag is 52mm, while the 038 and the 038 super are 50mm according to the IPL? But the workshop manual (page 3) stated 038 is 48mm.

038, 038AV, 038 Super, 038 Mag, 038 Mag II? Are these all the variations for the 038 series?

I was provided the IPL and workshop manuals from the kind people on this site. Let me put it up so that others can enjoy:

038, 038AV = 48mm bore X 34mm stroke

038AVS, 038 Farm Boss, 038 Super = 50mm bore X 34mm stroke

038Mag, 038MagII = 52mm bore X 34mm stroke.... and uses a larger case than the other's

All have brakes?
And all use same carbs? Exchangeable? Bings or Tillotson interchangeable?
Then the IPL I got doesn't describe all the models released, am I right?
Once the shroud is removed, how do you tell what model it is?

I've played with 038S to 038M conversion. Takes a bit of work to slot the cyl stud holes to match up 038S studs. Use 038M gasket. Both carbs will work but I chose the Bing. Factory settings were good (+1) even after opening up dual port mufflers ( at 1000 ft) . This 038S to M runs as good/better than my 038M ( it should it's all new stilh).

Early 038 had metal fuel/handle housings and are less desirable.

Oh I forgot, all the cranks are the same.
