A buddy has a 400 EVL, with a 16" bar. He wasn't sure what type of chain he had. Turned out to be .325 and 66 drive links. Not sure of the gauge. I've seen other 16" bars with 325 pitch but a different number of drive links. Are they different types? Also, he is interested in an 18" bar. Does any body know the drive link count for that bar? Thanx.

16 inch bars

Oregon has a great website and a bar, chain and sprocket locator you can use for that info.
Husky 394XP,Husky 340
Stihl 038,034,032,018
Echo CS302 x 2,3450.
Projects 8x 028's and 4 x 026's and 1 MS 360pro

.325" 16" 67 links
18" 74 links
20" 81 links

3/8 16" 60 links
18" 66 links
20" 72 links

There ya go!

You cant go by this, how many dl you need for a said bar varies quite a bit!
What one maker calls 18 may be closer to 16 inches actual, and bar shape changer dl count also. The ONLY way to know for sure how many dl you need is to count them, or read on the bar and I have found that to off to. The sprocket you running can chain it to, 7 or 8 pin. The 20 inch bar that came on one of my saws said 72 dl 3/8 right on it, but 72 dl was to long you had no adjustment, the bar was built for a diff saw originally. So I had to run 71 dl or run a 8 tooth rim.

No offence to 450 rider, just stating the facts!

Yep. I have seen 16" 3/8"LP bars ranging from 54-57DL and you're right about counting drive links being the only really accurate method. Going by a bar manufacturer's catalogue, markings on the bar, or website has caught me out quite a few times.

Each brand saw has their own bar mount, and you cannot generalize very
much. Stihl even has a few different bar mounts within their brand, so
you have to know what model you have.
When trying to stock chains, I found that many loop counts are the same
on several brands, so I stock those sizes, like:

3/8 l.p. 52, 56, 62 drive links fits most Poulans, Small Huskies, Echo, Shindaiwa.

.325 66, 72, 78 d.l. fits same brands

full 3/8 59, dl. Homelite, Mac
60 dl. a bunch, including Stihl
70 dl. Homelite, Mac
72 dl. a real big bunch, including Stihl

I could spend a lot of time and make a better breakdown, but you get my point, eh?

Those Counts are generally for stihl saws...... In fact stihl saws are the odd link counts in the real world 99% of other makes use a more common standard.

stihl 16" .325" 67 drivers
most others 66 driver

stihl 18" .325 74 drivers
most others 72 driver

stihl 20" .325 81 drivers
most others 78 driver

stihl 16" 3/8" 60 driver
most others 59 or 60 driver

stihl 18" 3/8" 66 drivers
most others 64 or 68 drivers

stihl 20" 3/8" 72 driver
most others 70 or 72 driver

some common examples

Also stihl seems to thing they need .063" gauge on their mid size saws and the rest of the world uses either .050" or .058"

All the Stihl saws my dealer sells have .050 bars on them and take the standard link count. I think it is a regional thing that determines what bars they mount on them and what type of chain is easiest or most common to find

I gotta go with MCW on this one. The (stock/original?) 15" Stihl bar on my 024 Super says 63 DL. I counted the drivers on the (Total) chain that's on there and it has 62. It has a 7 pin sprocket, fwiw.
Anyway, Oregon's website tells me 63 DL with an 8 pin (no option for 7 pin).
Bailey's offers Woodland Pro loops of 23RC in 62 DL and Oregon 22BPX in 62 DL. No 63 loops available. I'm guessing the mark on the bar is wrong.

While I have your attention...should I try 8 pin on this 15" saw ? I'm getting some 23RC for it.

different shape bars some have a deeper belly and some less. My dads 028 takes 66dl's but I had an 025 that I think only took 62dl's just a skinnier bar

I am sure that the 62dl one really is a 15", regardless of bar "belly".

The brands like to keep the dl count for a sertain length bar the same within the brand - so usually the "fatter" bars just are a tad shorter than the "skinny" ones (not much difference is needed to compensate, so most people probably don't notise it).

Anyway, 66dl isn't normal for a Stihl 16" bar either - they usually are 67dl.
