I recently acquired what I believe is a 268xp, at least that’s what kind of plastic the saw has.
Serial tag gone. I’ve read there’s a few different variations, plus could be a 266?
Going through the whole saw since the bearings were pooched. Here’s some pics. FE0405A0-8C85-403A-AD5F-9E3B59888B2D.jpeg68370CE3-028A-44CF-8123-154204D52B18.jpeg7EB0582C-3476-4F8C-8CF3-94EDA870475B.jpeg

Might answer my own question
Found a couple of 266 or 61 cylinders in my pile. Definitely bigger transfers on the 268.

You could wire brush the loose stuff.

In castiron 4 stroke crankcases I put GE glyptol electric motor paint. It seals in the sand from casting and the oil flows faster over it. But I never tried it in two strokes yet. Another option is to epoxy over it.

What causes the mag rot?

These were good saws in there day even today. I never lost a day of work due to a husky saw not running.

Yep...definitely a 268XP cyl…...in the middle pic of the first set you can see where the outside of the transfer port was machined off on the flywheel side to allow for the flywheel to spin through......266Xp didn't have this as the transfers were smaller....inside and out.....670 Jonsereds were the machined same as the 268XP just with a different impulse and intake.

So I decided to just reuse the crankcase, it’s not in that great cosmetic shape so just gonna be a low budget saw.
Turns out I buggered the flywheel when I removed it, most difficult flywheel I’ve removed ever.
no problem I thought, I’ve got more.Grab one with same part # but look at it closely, its timed different. Checked another one, same thing.
In the pic the left is 268xp, right is 266.
didn’t expect this.

Yep........the 268XP is the single coil ign....the 266 is the older two piece ign. There actually three flywheels for the family... the latest has a cast in key and a different taper if I recall correctly.

Kinda expected it had to do with the 2 piece design. Of course most of my spares r that style or the moulded in 1.
This project is officially on hold until I get my hands on a flywheel. And i refuse to pay flebay prices so it could be awhile....

I put the wrong flywheel on this saw.
