361-C and 9 pin sprocket

Well, I love my new 361-C, got a chance to run 3 tanks through it over the weekend. Can't wait till it really breaks in. It came with 3/8-.050-72 and a 20" bar and some RSC chain. NICE!!! Anyways, I thought I'd be kind to my wife and my wallet and try to run some of the .325 bars and chains from my 290, specifically the 16"er. Ordered up the 325 lg spline 9 pin sprocket and NO JOY! There's not enough room to fit it up. Dug a little further and noticed that the IPL says that the 325 9 pin doesn't work with the 361C. What's up with this and is there anyway around it.

I've got allot of good .325 stuff and I just wanted to use it and not have to run the 290 unless necessary, spoiled already. I know the 361-C likes the 3/8 no problem, but sometimes the German in me comes out.:(

Usually adding a drive link or grinding the bar allows clearance. Personally, I'd go with the bar grinding idea, it'll make throwing chains less likely. Use the roller on a bench style belt sander, it'll radius it better. Also, as with all grinding, keep it cool.

Although, I'm not sure just how well a 9 pin is going to work on that saw. I don't have any experience with .325, but since the difference between that and 3/8 is about the same as 3/8-.404, I'd guess that a 9 pin .325 is about the same as an 8 pin 3/8, and personally, I really wouldn't think of putting an 8 pin on a stock 361. Granted the .325 is lighter and more flexible, but it seems like more load than the saw has torque for, and you'd need to have feather hands to keep it from bogging.

The problem seems to be that this is a 361-C, quick stop(has the extra break on the handle). The sprocket I ordered is PN: 0000 642 1239, and it does fit on the saw, there is just no clearance to fit the bar with the chain on. It is the large spline as I have tried other sprockets from the 290 and they are smaller splined.
Maybe the C model's clutch drum is bigger and there is no way around this.

Andy, any suggestions?

I guess I'll be needing more bars and chains in 3/8 and walking lightly around the wife.

Not sure.... I can't see why it wouldn't work... 9 pin .325 - 1128 007 1011 is the drum KIT (clutch drum and rim, washer and clip) - it's listed for all 8 SKANDANVIAN models - including the - C. Note that it's 1128 - like 044/46/441... I suspect you have to change the drum as well.

Unfortunately I don't have the breakdown for the individual drums (not available separately anyhow)

What note did you find that said it wouldn't work?

Sorry... I don't use the IPLs... just Mediacat (CD which is updated a few times a year).
Yours isn't just a "C" - it's a CQ

Looks like the Q version wasn't released in Skand. (or if it was, it's a USA version!) so ignore what I just said.. yes.. even mediacat shows a restriction on the Q version - just a pain to see. The -Q has a different kit number which would indicate a different clutch drum (kit = 1135 007 1002) and only lists 3/8-7 .... hmmm... I'll look into it...

Easy way is new clutch drum kit, and rip off the quick stop!

Casey-just going by the parts I have in hand (stihl) and the IPL the 04Ultra sent me. I can't imagine that the OD of GB or Oregon sprockets is that much smaller.

That would be one way-wish I had known that before I ran it-I would have had the dealer swap it for a plain 361 and all these things would have been possible.

I'll give it a run, although I'm uncomfortable with it. Its my fault for not checking all the options out.
If you come up with any other ideas, please give me a shout.
