Latest model PS-5100s did have a catalytic converter. All of the PS-5105 have a catalytic converter. PS-510's are switching over as well.

My last load of PS-6400's have cat's on them and they will be coming on the PS-7900 anytime. But I recently got in a big pile of 7900's without cats on them.

I believe the cat mufflers are for the US market only on the 5105, so I guess it could be that way with the larger saws as well.....

Changed my 5105 muff out for a 5100 non cat muffler and the muffler temp dropped from 315 to 195 degrees checked via infared. Weight dropped quite a bit also.

Thankyou for sharing that Porsche!

That's a big difference. Muff mod cools it even more??

This does not look good for the blow up problems with 5100's. Increase in heat added to the lean settings is just not good.

Chevytown,
I think the muff mod on an older style non-cat muff may not change too much on the temp, guessing 5-10 degrees. Probably a larger drop in temp. difference at WOT. My heat tests were at 5 minute idle. Didn't try actually working temps. What I do know is the cat just runs hot, that's how it works. Can't be good for the engine even if the 5105 has a claimed 30% greater cooling effect from a re-worked air configuration.

I really enjoy this 50cc saw. Not the fastest but it sounds the best, has the best torque, and pulls a 3/8ths 18" buried well for it's size. I would buy it again.

For what it's worth I'm at 7-8 tanks and for half of them have tried to prove the engine problems claimed with this saw. Cut oak entirely with the bar buried in 32" trunks without stopping until the tank was almost done. No breaks between cuts. Nothing happened. I will say the cat is so hot I was concerned about the hood melting from the heat the first tank until I changed the muffler. I've seen echos get very hot with their cat too.

My caps are clipped, fuel turned up, rpms at 14,000, RSC chain, updated airfilter and all is well so far. Piston still looks new as well as the cylinder on the exhaust side. When the end of the tank arrives it will just set and idle like a small V-8, no problems...yet.

you saved it by trimming the limiters and adjusting.

For crying out loud....

The 5105 has been revised, Dolmar/Makita are claiming a 30% increase in the cooling (air flow) of the saw over the 5100S and AFAIK there hasn't been one reported problem with the 5105 so far, and they've been out a little while, both in Europe and North America.

It's hard to get rid of a bad reputation eh?

Did one on my Dolmar 420 take the muffler off and spilts in half where you can see the cat. After removing the saw starts easier runs cooler sounds better.

I actually did not know there were improvements. I really hadn't heard about that, but I have heard lots of the other kind of news about Dolmars.

My main gripe is that their saws are too ugly. I only buy pretty saws, regardless of specs. The only pretty saw they make is that top handle.

Is that so.:)

And THAT proves undeniably that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

Personally, I think you will have to look a long time to find a nicer looking saw than the Dolmars.
Unless maybe it a Makita!
