I would agree that the prices are not a myth but very rare.If you just look at what a select gun stock blank fetchs,those prices hold true.Just rather extraordinary.
By the same token though,every so often they find a fiddle back maple that brings very high prices for musical instruments but the market is limited to a select few buyers.A nice quarter sawn red oak ,long plank brings a healthy price also,used for boat building,keel beam.This too has a limited market.
