Adding ring locator pins to a piston without them

Is a new or used piston available?

For an xpw? Yes, they should be. Partstree has them for $125! The cylinder is about $200. I got a NICE used xpw cylinder and nos piston, sans rings, locally for about $75 through some careful checking in a bin of misc 372 stuff.

I believe the 372XPW (75cc 51.4mm) cylinder, AND piston have been discontinued by Husqvarna. Even if they haven’t, they are crazy expensive. To modify a 52mm piston might be the ticket. Oh, and if you’re turning down .6mm on the diameter, I don’t think you really need to make the ring grooves 0.3mm deeper, but even if you did, I’m sure you could on a lathe as well.
