Another 262XP Thread (tons of pics)

Hey everyone, I'm a new guy here. Just moved up to North Pole, AK last Oct and will be cutting quite a bit of wood for the next couple years. I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to join. Been reading almost nonstop since I joined, learning tons about saws. Right now I just own a Husky 262XP (I think 1992 model) that my dad gave me a few years ago and I've been using off and on ever since and a little Dolmar PS-341 I picked up off craigslist for $55 a couple weeks ago. I have a Jonsered 2077 that's in pieces being mailed to me pretty soon (again, from my dad). He said if he remembers right it had a broken piece in the chain brake and took it apart but never fixed it so it's been sitting for a few years in a box. He's a logger in PA and has quite a few old saws laying around. I think he uses 372XPs exclusively nowadays.

Anyway, the 262 runs/ran pretty good but I just got excited looking through all the rebuild threads on here and decided to take it apart. There's not much cutting to be done with 3' of snow and 0F temps anyway. At first I was just going to take the plastic parts off and clean everything up, but after I started, I just wasn't satisfied. I've spent quite a few dollars at a couple different sponsor sites over the last 2 weeks and am just patiently waiting for all those small boxes to show up. I'm going to post tons of pictures because I know that's what people like to see, plus I like taking them so I know how stuff goes back together. I'm also going to ask a few questions along the way I'm sure.

I'll start off with the earliest pictures i have of it to give you an idea of what my beginning state is like. It was used pretty hard while my dad owned it and this is my first service other than a new plug since I've had it.

Serial Number...Does this mean it was made in 1992? I thought I read somewhere that the first digit tells you. IIRC, 262s were made from 1990-2003 or so and I know it's older than 2002...no decomp on this one.

This is the main reason I took it apart for the first time a few weeks ago. Broken rear AV mount. Took it apart and installed a new one then decided to dive back in for the real deal.

Original piston beside Star Gry I picked up off eBay for around $20. I don't think I'm going to use it though, after reading up, I decided to order a Meteor piston to install instead. It hasn't arrived yet to compare though. I saw a 262 thread where someone used a Star Gry P&C and it only lasted 30ish hours I think. Just using the piston would probably be ok, but why bother when it's only a couple extra bucks for the Meteor.

Took some more pics of the cylinder after I cleaned it up a little bit with some engine degreaser. This one shows a busted thread on top of the spark plug hole. Is this anything to be worried about?

Flywheel removed. I spent about 20 minutes making a flywheel puller out of some scrap metal but it wasn't strong enough. Came in and checked AS and read about the "whack method" and the flywheel was off in a couple minutes. Gotta love shared knowledge!

That's it for today. I may have some time during the week to take some more stuff apart but spare time is a rare commodity lately. My next big step is to get the crankcase separated. I'm hoping the splitter I have from rebuilding my dirtbike engine will work but that's doubtful. Any good tricks or hints other than buying the right splitter?

Ya, I spent 36 hours there, tops, so I'm not going to act like I'm a 20 year resident. I just remember it being very Christmaslike for July. Hell, I'm sure you're going to appreciating all of those illuminated candy-canes in December. And -55, that's pretty rough, the worst we get here is cold nights of -40, which is bearable.

Those 24 hour light periods you get are sweet!

i use a propane torch to remove and install crankshaft bearings and to split crankcase apart.

muffler mod & nice thin cylinder base gasket does wonders for this saw!

Question

On the two pictures of the bottom of the top cover, there's a little white plastic piece that can be slid into 1 of 2 slots. I have a picture of it in each one. What's the purpose of moving it to the one that leaves the gap? It seems to me that the air filter would just have access to air above the cylinder which I imagine would be fairly warm... is that for running in cold temps?

Also, does anyone know where I can get a 262XP sticker like the original air filter cover had? All I've found is the starter housing cover (which I already have).

I'm still hoping to get the crankcase split sometime soon and get everything cleaned up then painted. I may replace the crank bearings since I'll have it apart anyway, but I haven't decided yet. I've already ordered new seals for it.
