Got a call the owner where I stable my mare at asking if I could cut up a tree for her that fell. I said sure no worries and I went over this afternoon... on the way to the fallen tree I noticed that in a pasture the horses had girdled quite a few of the shade trees.. any hope for these poor buggers or shall I tell her they are in need of dropping?

Actually they are fed well.. they are bored. They will chew up the fence line as well.. it is the absent owners that are to blame. Much like humans they get bored and become destructive. I have a feeling the trees have had it.. but time will tell.

It's called "cribbing" if you cut all those trees down, they will start on that wooded fence, and eat the top rail off it over time!!

No its not cribbing.. they are not sucking in air. But destructive none the less!!!

Even well fed horses will crib. They'll even do it with a manger full of hay in front of them.

I agree Harry. It is just boredom. The owners pretty much park the horses there and visit once in a while. If I take one of their horses out it will be fine for a week or so then back it goes. I tell the owners just take the horse for a walk in the back 40, beautiful fields, deer a great walk then back in the paddock..

Those are dead for me. Any survivors I would strap at least a few planks around them so that the trees have some chance.

I have to agree they are done for! These horses were moved to a different paddock where there was more " action " gong on and they have not even gone near any of the trees there! Funny creatures.
