I think it's an American chestnut tree.
Long time since I've seen one though since they were all but killed from blight ages ago.
From memory leaf, wood and bark look right.

I don't know how i missed that one when I have Two American Chestnuts in my front yard?

I went out and pulled a couple leaves off and there a perfect match to the OP's Pictures

I don't think its Chestnut...leaves not long or serrated enough.

Ummmm.... well...... since the last one of these (types of) threads resulted in a walnut attached to the roots of a Box Elder seedling... I abstain.

After-all... I ain't no fool.

I'm a thousand and ten percent sure that wasn't a box elder... But, I think you're still mad about missing out on page 200 AND post # 3000 in the picture thread... :jester:

Hadn't see one in so long I had to go do a refresher on American chestnut.

Hard to tell from the original leaf pic but I cant see the holy like leaf spikes on edges that chestnut has.

My first thought was red elm but the bark behind the leaf just don't look elm like at all.

LOL I hear you on that one.
I've tried to ID pictures of various piles of wood with 4 or 5 things in them.
They are always fun.
Got to love when the leaf and bark are from two different things, makes it a tad more difficult.
Think you might be right on your first instinct here, elm of some format.
