Growing up as a kid, my grandmother had an apple tree that produced small, tart apples. Great for applesauce!

She called it an "Early June". I have also heard "Early Harvest".

I cannot find these types anywhere. Any ideas?

Heritage Apple Trees and Seeds

You might try a search of the above topic for a number of sites on apples-U of Vermont is one for eg. I suspect this is an older variety of apple that has fallen out of favour today because the apples are small and not sweet. My Grandfather's farm orchard had a wonderful tree that my aunt always called "Peach Apples" because they were very yellow, large and looked like peaches. They were great for sauce when green, and sweet beyond description when ripe, but bruised extremely easy.
