Help.. I want to grow some apple trees on my hobby farm in northeast MN. This is zone 3 at best. I've bought and planted several trees (some for more money at local nurseries and some cheap-os from walmart) I've planted 6 trees over the last 2 years being careful to follow my nurserymans advice on planting and wrappimg the trunks with tree wrap. The only tree that has survived is my MacIntosh. The Honeycrisp, Braeburn and Harelson have died. My Harelson actually survived two winters here and was opening buds this spring then gave up before they fully opened. There seems to be some live shoots down near the ground but they might be from the root stock.
Can't I grow Apple trees up here?
The winters comonly drop to -30 to -40 f.

Check with Aubin or Jefferies Nursery (Portage la Prairie) in Manitoba. There are several varieties that they sell that do good up here. I can't remember a single variety name now, but they are both good sources for trees.
