Axe used to cut roots

I know if a chainsaw hits dirt..not good,,,,any reason not to chop roots ( large bush removal) in the ground with an axe. Can't see it getting dull from doing it but correct me if I'm wrong.

It's not near as critical as hitting dirt with a chainsaw, but it will definitely still dull your bit after a while. I'd use a junker axe if I was going to do that, or just be prepared to hit the grinding wheel when you're done.
 
We have an old double bit axe at work for chopping tree roots when installing blvd sidewalk. Works great. I would not use a nice one though as sometimes you hit rocks!
