Steve,

I need to talk with you some evening regarding the Wards. When we talked prior to the race I was focussed on getting saws ready. After the races when I went to find you I saw you had left.

Here are 4 videos from the contest last Saturday. The first is Steve getting abused when his Lancaster quit in the cut.

This is my Mac 250. Some people think it's not stock, I've done very little to it. I enlarged the small round holes in the muffler, and replaced the points with an electronic module. What really helped this saw is the 9pin sprocket, round chisel 3/8, and rollotronic bar.

More to come!

Thanks

These are great pics and vids. Good to put some faces to names I am framiliar with. I hope to see more at the midwest GTG. JR

My 740 is a bit tired, as are the other old McCullochs. I am sure with a better bar/chain combo, over riding the governer, and perhaps a more skilled operator the performance would be better.

As you can see, even my SP125C with the bar/chain that I had performed pretty dismally compared to the others.

I am hoping that we will have some big logs to cut at out GTG locally on the 27th September, maybe the 125 will be more exciting when it really gets to grunt.

Actually

I finally had a chance to see the videos, that was my 1-85 which is a gear drive saw so indeed it is pretty slow compared to the others.

On the other hand, the 740 time was nearly 4 time longer than the 1-85 (two cuts vs. one cut) so yeah, the 740 was pretty slow after all.

Sp 125

I don't know much about those really big saws, but when I heard Marks SP 125 run for the first time, I just figured the trees would fall down out of fear from the sound. It has a throaty sort of growl unlike anything I have ever heard. JR

Your 125 just needs a tune up. Once she's runnin right it should go right by that 090 in the size wood you guys were cutting.

My Disston DO101, it really needs some bucking spikes, I can't get enough pressure on the chain. Thanks Lewis Brander for the carb parts!

Here's a pic of the big chips this chain makes.
Well, that's about it for this year.

I would have loved to show off my 797 up there.
Heimanna, from what i saw my 797 is a whOLE OTHER BREED:hmm3grin2orange:

I just got my first super797 today. It had been converted to fanwheel start instead of clutch side start, so it had starter handles on both sides (not pretty but it worked). Luckily I had a super44a that is a basket case and had all the clutch side start apparattus and proper fanwheel cover. About an hour later it was restored to original condition. It didn't need anything mechanically so after putting it back together i started it up and although I haven't put it in big wood yet I have to say it feels stronger than my 125 it certainlky revs faster. We'll see how it goes this season as I put it in some big hardwood for firewood and milling. Also found and ordered a backup carb kit for it too. If it is as good or better than my 125 , it will see a lot of use.

Where is Sterling?

Hoss,

I will be in VA probably October, Chesapeake area but likely going up to Salisbury MD as well. If you are anywhere within 100 miles or so I can try to arrange an extra day on the trip to come for a quick visit. I would love to see some more old yellow saws.

If you have any suggestion on tuning the 125 I am interested, I replaced the points and condenser with new, the carb is fixed H jet, what else can I do? I don't believe I ever replace the spark plug.

I suppose if I wanted to be serious about racing the saw I need to get a better bar and chain combo, the 32" hardnose bar is not exactly ideal for cutting 10" cants and the chain needs a lot of work to get the edges sharp again as someone before me wore it extremely dull.

On the other hand, the 1-85, 740, 550, and SP125's do look right with those long bars.

If your route from chesapeak to salisbury takes you up route 50 then you will be within 100mi. As far as tuning goes and assuming that you have good compression, the first thing is to get a fully adjustable carb for that beast. Mine had a fixed high jet carb at first too and the tpoend was never right. Once I put on the fully adjustable carb and set the topend properly it was a different animal. Another thing you can do is add an 8 pin 3/8 pitch rim drive sprocket (2 on ebay right now) then get a good 3/8 chisel chain and a 20-24" sprocket or roller tib bar. Also these things have an adjustable oil pump, so turn that thing all the way up. After these steps you should have a monster on your hands. One more thing, make sure that your decomp closes all the way. Sometimes when they get a lot of carbon deposits on them they don't seal as tightly as they should.
