Bench grinder

I have an Oregon speedcut chain which is the .325 pitch, .050 gauge that uses a 3/16 inch file. I have a bench grinder and the grinding wheel is 1/8 in thick. Should I get a grinding wheel that is 3/16 of an inch wide instead of the eighth of an inch wide

No, 1/8 is fine. Make sure to get the wheel low enough so the side plate has some hook. If the side plate has some hook and the rakers aren't to high it will cut really good. Steve

I would use a 3/16" thick grinding wheel, if one is available for your grinder.
Profile the edge of the grinding wheel to match a file of the same diameter.

3/16 doesn’t fit between the depth gauge and the cutting edge if it’s a newer chain. It needs about 20% of the tooth ground off to slide in there on an angle. I always use 1/8” on them, at least until they are ground back some

It’s a grinding wheel! It makes its own pathway!

Seriously, I use 3/16” from the start. Might end up shaving a little off the back of the depth gauge on a tight chain.
