Last year, I purchased a wild black cherry tree (http://www.henryfields.com/product/Black_Cherry/fruits). It was small and bare root, so I put it in dirt and kept it watered. I'd planned on putting it out in the fall but had a health issue or two that kept me from doing so. The tree has started dying in the top from about halfway up. What, if anything, can I do to save it?

I would look for obvious signs of pests or changes in soil and or environmental elements.
Is it in an area with lots of sunlight as this species loves light.
Do not eat leaves, twigs or pits as they are poisonous and contain cyanide.(or more accurately enzymes that turn into cyanide)

I have ten of thousands as weed trees here in GA.
If you can find a local one you could collect seed. They grow fast.

Why collect seed? Just put up a fence and let the birds do the seeding. I have cut down all but one of the ones along my fence line and that last one is going down in the spring when I figure out how to get it down without destroying the fence.
