I'm in conversation with an owner of a C7 Tree Farmer (probably an early 1990's Cummins powered machine) who says that he can't get the machine into 3rd or 4th gear. 1st and 2nd work fine he says. I'm guessing this machine has a Clark 4 speed transmission.

I'm wondering if it would be a simple electrical problem (solenoid) or hydraulic (value not opening/closing) or worse, internal. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.

Linkage may be worn or in need of adjustment.

Thanks for the suggestion. Never thought that it could be a linkage problem, but if the tranny shifts into 1st and 2nd with no problem, I'm wondering if the linkage is ok? Or does 3rd and 4th gear have its own linkage?

On my timber jack the pin and clevis would wear and it would not stay in gear.

Can you tell me more about the model, motor (cummins?), and transmission (3 or 4 speed power shift?) on your machine? It may very well be the same as this C7. thanks.

Might be a bent shift fork. Keep in mind I know nothing specific about this tractor or trans.
