On the 357 I had the tank didn't go to the rear of the handle. If you held it up to a light you could see a partition in the tank approx 3 inches from the rear. Alot of the 357/359's around here have whips on tanks for pulp cutting.
 
It is a plastic,flexible rod with a spring on the end that bolts to the tank of the saw. It is used to measure the length of wood for junking. I had my saws set up so from tip of bar to tip of "whip" was 4' 2". Two lengths of saw was 8'4" for stud wood, three lengths 12'6" for logs and so on. Most cutters use spencer tapes now because mills pay a bonus for logs junked to proper lengths.I will post a picture of one when my camera gets back tonight.
