The coil off the 390 will work but it's a limited coil probably 13,000.It should say so on the side of the coil.On a 372xt you need at least a 13.300 or a unlimited coil.Black unlimited blue limited, your saw should rev to about 13,300.

A few points:
How the starter retracts has nothing to do with the crank moving, should retract freely even if crank is locked.
NEVER run a saw with no clutch drum, if the springs snap or extend too much, the clutch shoes can come free and become lethal projectiles.
NEVER run a saw with a newly installed clutch and drum but no chain and bar unless you are absolutely sure the clutch has been properly tightened on the crank. Rev it up and when you back off on the throttle, the clutch continues to spin, unthreads itself and falls off the saw doing about 10,000 rpm.

But, they can be fun to chase

You think the spring is weak? you saw that I tried 2 starters on it, both feel fine when pulling unattached.

That does help. I think part of the problem was I didn’t have an air shroud with the saw. Once I got the air shroud, it worked much better

Well, loosening the bolts would have given you that clue...
