Decaying leaves.

My wife and I have just moved into a new home. We're just getting to know our surroundings, but all the trees (5) in the backyard seem to be decaying. I've attached a photo and hope someone can shed some light on this problem for us. There's also what resembles an apple tree, but it didn't bloom or bare fruit. The leaves on this tree also seem to have browned in the late spring and didn't look healthy at all all summer.
