Not sure what kind of wood this is. I cut the tree down several months ago and just split the logs. When I cut it down, I thought it was a type of red oak (shingle oak), based on the leaves and smelled like other red oaks, but while splitting it, not so sure. The wood has dark heartwood and light sapwood, kind of like walnut (but definitely not walnut), and it is real stringy, like hickory.

I have never cut anything that smelled like oak that was not oak. But I have never seen oak with that dark of heart wood; but I know there are a lot of species of oak that I have never cut before. I don't have a clue what it is. I agree, it is not walnut.

No leaves--I cut it back in January, although I initially thought it was hickory based on the shape of the leaves, which I found out is similar to Shingle Oak leaves.

shagbark hickorys leaves look exactly like that and are very big.

Yes, I agree, but the bark on this tree didn't look at all like shagbark hickory (we have those around also). If it's another type of hickory, I'm still trying to figure out which one.

From what I've read, black hickory doesn't naturally grow where we are (south-central Ohio)...

agree on hickory after I saw the bark, wood confirmed it. Darkest heartwood I have ever seeb

Pignut or bitternut maybe....

And if it helps any, these were taken right after it was cut. Although it was the end of January, we had a few real warm days that month and it had some buds coming out.

This is another tree that I cut down tonight, which I'm not sure of.

It has obviously been dead a while, and some of the bark had fallen off.

The heartwood is somewhat darker, and it split easily. This one did not smell like red oak at all.

Any ideas?

Now that you mention it, I remember that smell--it's been a long time since I've cut white oak.

white oak has a real nice sweet smell, nothing like that pissy red oak!
