In retrospect. I would have been better off to just notch it and do a conventional back cut. Live and learn I guess.

like svk said... no two trees are the same...at least you saw the chips get darker and presumably your saw start ripping through the back-cut...situational awareness is paramount for every tree...complacency invites injury...never assume it's going to be an easy fall...cheers
