No, not exactly firewood related but I wasn't sure where to post this. (although some of these may end up firewood lol)

I milled a few unknown logs a couple weekends ago. I mean, I suspect I know what they are but I'm not sure. I'll attach a couple pics of slabs for each log.

Log A (pretty sure it's white oak)

Log B (some sort of red oak? spalted maple?)

Log C (no idea, bailed when I saw the rot went that far)

I slabbed a tree that had been down for years, no bark, etc. I ended up sending a piece in for identification, free of charge. Took a couple weeks but it's a free service that you can use. U.S. Forest Service. My guess some kind of oak although it has some spalting you see a lot in maple.

White Oak
Maple
Pine ?
I'm still not sure lol. The first two pics are either white oak or some sort of really straight grained red oak. It has that very wide heartwood like you see in white oak, but the color does look to be more red than the brown/tan you get in white oak heartwood. I feel like the second two slabs are some off the wall oak species you don't see that much. The last two I'm not so sure about. The log ends didn't have a bunch of sap or anything like you see with pines, nor did they have any sort of pine smell. It was def some sort of hardwood. It does look similar to pics of Laurel Oak I've seen.

If this were split firewood it would be much easier for me to tell as the grain structure stays intact, I'm new to slabbing and lumber though, cut grain seems much to harder to read than split grain.

Milled a 8'x20" inch log today, another mystery! A lot of color in it! Seems to be the same wood as some of the slabs posted in the OP.

2nd pic is oak of some sort.

The spalted and rotted stuff can be stabilized with the right stuff/chemicals and make some very interesting stock to play with.
First and second pics in the OP were from the same log, I know it's def some sort of oak. I don't know what the technical term is for it but it had that tiny boxy or rectangular like pattern that you only see in oaks. I'm hoping to salvage some of it, as I think it has some great spalting and colors in it! I've got over 20 slabs out of this scrap pile stuff. Ordered some borax to treat it all with because there's a bore hole here and there in some of it. I tried to avoid anything that had deteriorated too far or had any actual mush/rot anywhere.

The stuff I’ve seen basically impregnates the wood entirely, similar to an epoxy. I’ll try and find the name of the stuff. It is used by turners. The entire piece is immersed in the liquid.

No, this stuff was for punky, spalted stuff from what I was told.
Gotcha. I don't think I'll need to do anything like that, all the wood seems solid and hard still.

I looked through some pics last night and I believe this stuff here is all red maple. The top slab came out of a log that was slightly more deteriorated than the bottom. I wouldn't mess with anything any older than that!

Well, that looks like Maple.
The other was definitely oak
Agreed. just not sure if it's red or white. The grain pattern and wood structure looks like a typical white oak. But the color has more of a red hue where white oak is more a light brown/tan in the heart. Idk how much the age of a log affects the coloring of the wood. I wouldn't think it would but who knows.

Good end grain pics are needed. The Wolf likely nailed it.

I think the first 6 pics are RED oak not Appalachian (White or Burr or Chikapin). Post #6 and 12 I think (fairly Sure) is Spalted Maple. need to go back to re read. I Agree that a split would be very helpful The chain kerf if obscuring a lot.
After scouring around looking at slab pics online, I'm pretty sure #6 and #12 are indeed maple. Red maple to be exact. The first two pics in the OP are the oak, second two are more spalted red maple and I have no idea what the last two are. I should have wet them before posting pics.

Got 7 Pecan slabs today!!!
