Help! My tree has a dark spot.

My silver maple has developed a dark spot. Has anyone seen something like this before?

It was here when I bought the house in 1996 and just as big.

If it has not changed any in 27 years, I would not worry about it.

The dark spot is new this year. The rest of the tree hasn't changed.
