I have what I think is a magnolia tree and it is about 40' tall. It does not look very healthy and only has one flower budding at this time. We had a very dry and warm spring so I am guessing that could have something to do with it also. Could it just be a bad year for it or can I help it out?

Spray it with Daconil, it will get rid of that stuff growing on it.Oh, and that is a magnolia. It may need a good deep watering if the ground is dry for a long time.

Nothing wrong

Southern Magnolia only keep 2 years leaves on. They are dropping 2010 leaves now that the 2012 new leaves are expanding. Low temperature injury on those branches from previous years...prune them out.
The lichens grow on tree trunks, rocks, etc. High humidity, sometimes from irrigation systems will allow them to grow. Not affecting the tree detrimentally in any way.
