Does anyone know how thick the plating is on the cylinder wall of a Stihl and how much honing you can do. Does a brake cylinder hone basically just remove the glaze or if you do it a bit too long can you go thru the plating?

It's just a few thou thick at best. Barke hone may have problems hitting the sides of transfers, esp open transfers or ones with large lower windows.

If you have any significant cylinder dammage, you can't hone it out. Might clean up a bit of scuffing. Glaze is not a big issue like in automotive cylinders.

A ball hole is likely a safer bet, but even there just go as light as possible. the Balls will hit the sides of the ports hardest in the direction of span and won't cut evenly.
