This is a valley surrounded by forested mountain ranges. Some are less than 20 miles away.I didn't know trees grow in the desert!?! Thought it was all sand!
Rot, bugs, fungus.
White pine logs cut in warm weather will acquire blue stain fungus just sitting for a short time.
Woods left on the ground becomes riddled with insects, some worse than others, again white pine.
Other woods just rot in short order, white birch is an example
