I currently own a Husky 359 and although I am happy with the saw I wish it could do a bit more (my next saw up is a 3120, just a little heavy for all day use). I can trade in my 359 and get a Dolmar/Makita 6401 for $100 and get a .8 HP gain, or I could spend that same money on modding my 359. I just don't have a lot of experience with how far you can take a 359 and still have it be reliable (this is my day to day saw).

Anyone care to chime in with their $.02 on the issue? And is $100-200 enough to really take the 359 where I want it to go?

Going from a 359 to a 6401 you would be gaining a bit of size and weight and almost no power.Unless you are planning a future BB kit.

Husky 359 - 3.9 HP, 12.1 lbs.
Dolmar 6400 - 4.8 HP, 13.6 lbs.

The Dolmar has almost 20% more power for roughly 10% more weight. It also has 4 times the warranty of the husky when used for commercial cutting. What kind of warranty are you going to get on a modded 359??

If I were to upgrade I would go with the 7901. The 6401 is nearly identical in weight but the 7901 is far superior in power.

I would go with the 6401,if your not happy with it you can always go with the 79 cc p&c or the BB.

If you go with the 6401 and then decide to do the 7900 top end which is about $200, then you are going to have a lot of power for the weight of the saw.

Nothing in it's class is going to cut like a 7900.

I have been wondering about this? How do the two compare side by side, would'nt they be about the same?If not Why:confused:

The 6401 is 64 cc, the 7901 is 79 cc. Everything else is the same (crank, carb, weight). More cc's=more power. Tim Taylor would be proud.

I thought he was talking abouta 6401 with a 79 cc p&c,my bad!

I would think they would be the same:dunno:

He was talking about the 7900 being exactly the same saw as a 6400 with a 7900 top end... Same bottom end and rest of saw, except the 7900 has a bigger jug, 15 more cc's, and apparently quite a bit more power...

Dump the 359

:chainsaw:Since I have owned all three 359. 6401, 7900, I would say sell the 359 and buy a 7900 and a 5100. These two saws would cover just about anything you would encounter for your usage.

i would probably go with the 6401, and port it out! if that ain't enough then go the 7900 jug & piston.

be aware though i like the 70+cc saws!:greenchainsaw:

359 is heavy

The 359 may have a very slight increase of torque over the PS5100 but the Dolmar is much lighter and smoother of a saw, also the Dolmar is rated at 4.1HP. Husky 359 is a waste of saw to me because it is heavy for only 3.9hp. For the same weight I would not pass up a MS361.

Hey TAXMANTOO,

I have a NEW JD CS62 coming to me this week.
What am I to expect and be careful of - breakage wise - with this saw?

must remember a 359 is not a pro class saw. In performance measures the 5100 and 361 are "pro" saws and would compete with the 357xp, just alittle perspective for my sake:cheers:

I'd buy a 372; You can share bars and chains on the 3120 and it's a really great saw.
