this may be a daunting task, but i think it would be nice to have a list of these saws which came from the factory in either open or closed port configuration, has this ever been done before? if not, it would be nice for input from those that know for sure on certain models that they're familiar with that have open or closed port cylinders, is this worth a try?............................:rolleyes2:...........guess i should add that i'm really only interested in the pro and better built homeowner models

well maybe this will make it easier, i'll list some saws i'm not sure on, and see if this helps me i.d. if they are open or closed port cylinders, models 66, 266, 268, open or closed port?, also i know that my earlier model 61 was open port, but were there any model 61's with closed port?

Best to do something like this by saw chassis or "family". So starting with the one you mentioned:

Open port:
Husky 61, 66 and non-XP 268. Jonsered 625

Closed port:
Husky 162SE, 266SE/XP, 268XP, 272XP. Jonsered 630 and 670.

Shared cylinders:
Husky 66 and non-XP 268.
Husky 162 and Jonsered 630.

-266se and xp and are closed port.

-268se, xp and Special are closed port (larger transfers than the 266).

-"Plain" 268 and 66 are open port (same top end).

-162se is closed port.

-61 always is open port, regardless of exact version.

Keep in mind that you don't know what has been changed earlier on a used saw.

thanks spike, yeah, that's what i was thinking as well, family or by the 1xx, 2xx, 3xx series of saws, thanks for the info, now how about the 50,51,55 series, i know there were both open and closed port on the 55, where do these fit in serial number wise? any clue?

The 51/55 was primarily an open port deal. The closed port 55 had a brief run around 1998?? There was really no special model designation on the saw itself. But now and then one comes in the shop and you can tell from looking at the side of the cylinder that it's not your run of the mill 55. Probably should have been called the 55XP. ;)

That cylinder is NLA from Husky. It may have been used on a Partner model, but I'm not really clear on that. Mark or Kevin would have to jump in here to answer that question.

As far as I know, it was the first EPA version (about 1998-2001) that was closed port, but it also had a smaller bore (45mm vs. 46) than the regular 46mm open port.

A 46mm closed port version was used on the P5500 and the PP325 - those top ends are very hard to find today.

i guess it would be safe to say that all xp version saws were closed port, se models also?, next up would be the 180, 280, 380, 480, 1100, 2100, 2101, L series, although i would want to say these are all closed port, but would like to verify..................

257 is a straight open port. Doesn't really match up too well with the round hole in the crankcase.

thanks again spike, i think i'm getting down to the main saws i wanted to know about, still would like to know for sure on the 180 280 380 480 1100 2100 2101 298 plus the L series saws, i'm quite sure they were all closed port, same with the 238se and the 242, i guess lastly (at least i think), would be the smaller saws, 140 240 340 series......................again thanks to all that have helped, i'll make a nice list when done and post them all together.................040

All of the above are closed transfer.....180 - 480 and the L's are all bottom fed closed transfers like a 372, etc.:msp_thumbup:

That is all true, but there are more models in those model "families". Most of those are also closed port designs - but not all.

Regarding the "140-family" (140, 240, 340, 40, 344, 444, 44 and 644), I am sure the 40, 44 and 644 are open port, and reasonably sure all others are closed port.

Regarding the "133-family" (133se, 234se, 238se, 242, 42, 242xp and 246), I am sure the 42 and 246 are open port, and the 238 and 242 (all versions) closed port - and I am reasonably sure the 133 and 234 are closed port as well (but not 100%).

One thing I am not sure about is if the 160, 260, 163 and 263 belongs to the 180 "family". I suspect they do, but I am not 100% sure. I would be very surpriced if any of them are open port, but again I am not 100% sure.....
