The tree was ant killed. Ants like poplar! Although cottonwood sounds good. Same family. I don't think its locust and not Oak. Too ridged for white oak, not a red oak.

Heavy leaner, best left to the professionals. Best guess is a medium aged WASP typically found in urban or sub-urban areas, some are full of metal, plastics, foreign objects and can be rough on equipment. As with all high risk take downs wear all PPE possible and work the job slowly and carefully, beware of critters. Ropes or bucket is a personal choice, probably both.

I have no idea what kind of tree that is.
