Good thread by the way with some really good videos, particularly from Randy. Those ones from Tahune are also great. I've been there a couple of times and those guys certainly are pros - when you see the height of some of the trees they've been up to prune dead limbs so they don't fall on the elevated walkways you'd be amazed. This area has some of the tallest trees in the world and has actually the 2nd tallest tree at present. I've spoken to Graham Mcmahon (the owner of the tree company that did this job) via email and he's a really nice guy. If anybody ever gets the chance to go to Tahune do it, I could go back again and again. It is awesome and as much as I hate to say it you can see why the Greenies are so active in some parts of Tasmania when trees like this are getting felled. Luckily not that often anymore.
Here's a photo of the main tree in the video from off the walkway...

I'll put 7 of my own videos in here just for the hell of it...

The right combo of words could do it.

"Please can I have vacation boss" or "You're a #### so get ######"? What would you go with Randy? I'm new at this. Second option likely to give me a longer vacation but one that I will be less likely to afford.

Guys, for an average guy, how long does it takes to became a decent faller?
months? years ?
I`ve been working for few years now pruning orchards, using mostly Fiskars tools, hand tools and anything extra is barely necessary.
but boy, felling do look like fun.

Time is certainly a factor but so is number of trees felled, the type of trees, the terrain, eye/saw coordination (which some people simply will NEVER pick up), lean etc etc. There are far too many variables to set a date but experience is the key.
There are guys that have been felling for 5 years that are likely to be far better fellers than guys that have been in the industry for 40 years, and vice versa.

For instance I would class myself as a relatively good faller on the types of trees I cut, but get me on different species on 45° slopes with springboards and I'd have to start basically all over again, or just bust my leg which would more than likely be the case :D
