I survived the ice storm that in Kansas City, but my beautiful red bud tree did not. Its trunk is twisted and leads to two large branches, one away from the house (which is almost completely gone now), and one leaning towards the house, which survived completely. How much is safe to prune to keep the tree somewhat balanced, yet allowing the possibility that the tree may live?

At this time, prune only dead and broken material. With over 50% loss of leave surface the tree will be very stressed for years. Maybe even leave stubs so that sprouts can form and good ones can be trained into new branches.

For expert advise I recomend Hendrickson Tree Care
http://www.hendricksontreecare.com/ I did work for them early ing the aftermath.
