The power rating of the 076 was 7.0 hp, not 9.3!

I know nothing about how HP is rated, and have never really cared
to put the time and effort to learn.

But can tell you 076 pulls like it has 9 or 10 HP if 066 has 7hp
In big wood 075/076 makes 066 look like a kiddy's saw.
In size and raw grunt power.

Then my idea did not help at all, those are the models that were already on the table. At least it was a idea.

It was and is good idea.
Your idea gets a person in the ball park a few where out of the park when guessing.

IMO it's 050, 051 but am not sure, as I'm not about most things.
unless I have been drinking then am right about everything......guess thats
why I don't drink anymore :hmm3grin2orange:

To fill out the picture, the current production 076 is rated at 7.2 hp, and the current 051 at 5.9 hp. The original ratings were just a bit lower.

And 660 is rated at 7.1 hp
They maybe rated almost the same HP, but thats the trouble with getting
info from a piece of paper. Things can be and are diff in the real world.

066/660 will out cut 076 in smaller wood with it's speed.
But big wood and long bars 076 will make 066 cry to it's mommy. :)

Max hp numbers and/or max torque numbers will never tell the full story of how a saw (or anything else) will perform - that is just how it is! ;)

yes. in the bigger the wood. the advantage goes to the 075. i timed my 066 and my 075 in 25'' wood and my 075 beat my 066 by 1 and a half seconds. my 050 came in 1 second behind the 066. those saws are very torque y.

IMO 25" wood is on the small side for 076.
I would think in 20" wood 066 would beat 076.
But get up to and bigger than 30" wood is were 076 would really
start to spank the 066.

Looks like an early 051 to me.

I think the 050's had an embossed model number on the filter cover. Early model 051's also had the same embossed style cover. Mid model 051's had the riveted model number as shown on this saw. Also the old style Stihl logo on the starter points to an earlier to mid year model as well as the guard on the muffler. Later models had a longer guard that went back to the end of the handle. Really late models had a chain brake and the modern style plastic pawl starter.

Excellent old saws the 050-076's:)

Phil
