Man that baler splitter looks like timing is everything. Most of those rigs that are real fast look like a real fast way to have an accident. Every time I've seen those things in use its always real nice straight grained wood that splits easily. I'd like to know what happens with a real knarly twisted grain piece?

Dad made one once. Had a machinist friend do the cone and welded a PTO connector on it. Everything worked well until he threw a piece of elm on it. It sucked it up, twisted around, and tore the PTO shield off of the tractor. That was the last time he used it. Smart move on his part. Went to wedges and splitting mauls.

Angel, you can use it if you like. I can see the posts now....." Well there used to be a guy that posted on here a lot that HATED 009s......." LOL
Take my advice partner, run away from that thing. A friend of mine tried one and it worked real good on ash. He grabbed a piece of elm and it hung on there, broke the frame and I thought the tractor was gonna dance out of the barn before we could get it shut off. Did you ever see a washing machine with an off balance load? Dayum that thang!~

We had one on the farm running off a tractor PTO, but just to add to the party it was on a shaft that ran east west with the cone splitter on one end of the shaft and a 4 foot unguarded sawmill blade on the other.
Dad got sick of it getting stuck on the stringy pine so he welded 4 "paddles" to the wider area of the cone to help clear stuck bits.
Well it did help clear em, throwing bits of pine in every direction in all sorts of velocities. The ultra fun bits would come down on the spinning blade which would then really launch a bit of pine through the air with so much spin they would race along the ground once they finally hit the floor.

Makes me want to hid under a tractor just thinking about it.

I just saw one of these "sticklers" in my Farm Show Magazine. He took an old post hole auger gearbox, powered it with a hydraulic motor, and uses his Skidsteer to run it. Looks pretty cool. The one mounted on the vehicle looks better suited for laying waste to a graveyard full of zombies than for splitting wood. Mounting it on the skidsteer you are far away from the spinning death, plus you can just run it in a bit and carry those chunks to wherever they need to go then split them up. And you'd never even have to leave your seat. It's in the "Energy Saving Ideas" Issue of Farm Show if anyone is interested in taking a look.

Wonder why none of the European folk have jumped in on this one. I used one of these types for 15 years or so. Not the cheesy type mentioned here but a PTO type unit with some safety attachments and rigging for getting it off stuck wood. If you ever travel to Europe and see the one meter lengths of split wood stacked, it was most likely split with a screw type PTO unit.

Everyone screams they are dangerous. I did not think they are any more dangerous then a hydraulic splitter. Well maybe a little. This one that attaches the the car is defiantly a lot more dangerous then the PTO ones with the safe-guards on them.

I only wish I had a picture of the one I used for years. :(

Used one as a kid, had to heat the huntin cabin.
Jacked up the old 196? Dodge farm truck, threw it into Granny gear and let it idle. Never saw a piece of wood it wouldnt eat.

I saw an add for one of those cone splitters, advertised as a "money saving" idea. Even had a nice picture of it set up on a Chevy truck. Now how am I saving money running my 350 Chevy instead of a 5hp Briggs?....
