As its well established I'm new to most of this...but I'm awefully stoked about buying my 1st saw this Thursday!:chainsaw:

I know that Osage & Black locust are here in AL...just kinda unlearned on locating it and how to ID it...I've got some 45 or so acres on my Granny's Property where they once had livestock @ my disposal.

Yet, just wanted to go out with a little more info than "Internet Pics, and looking for thorns or baseball size green fruit which has probably perished by now"!

If you guys could send some pics close up of both tree's and some tips on locations and ID...I'd be mighty grateful...Hell!!! I just might bring you HALF A CORD!:wink2:

Thanks

Reggie
ps...the race has now been narrowed between a Stihl or Echo probably entry level.:potstir:

Get the stihl and start cuttin. leave the depot saws to non members.

Will do...any tips on finding and IDing?

Or, for a better buy than any Stihl dealer'll do you, for non-pro refurb Husqys, go to VMInnovations dot com, in Omaha.

Last year, I got a 455r for $307 delivered. Price is even lower now. Saw is a beast. Forget the 180s and 250s.

Black locust is really easy to identify from the bark. The irregular branching is also a giveaway. Don't expect all this to come instantly- give it a little time.

Hedge is also easy to identify with the leaves off the trees. Hedge apples wedged in branches and branches that are a big tangled up mess are sure signs of hedge. The bark on smaller trees have a tan or orange tint.

Hedge weighs about the same, wet or seasoned. Around 4000 lb/cord as I recall. We take all of it we can find. It's a bit rough on the chain. I just touch it up as needed.

And a lot of really sharp thorns. ;o)

I just hate hearing folks burning osage called bois de ark where I'm from. One its a sparkler, two if its a fairly strait 6 foot piece its highly valued as bow wood staves.

Hey, I hear ya. It can spark all it wants inside that cast iron belly of a stove...if it makes ya feel any better I'll save ya a nice long piece for a bow or something.
I'm sentimental on bows myself...I've got a few still left somewhere...I gave away most and sold some, don't have much use for em now...since the addition of .50 Cal Auto & his friend Mr. AR-15! :hmm3grin2orange:

I think it's like "highly valuable walnut". Great, if you can find someone to buy it. There's no market here for either. I burn both.

Well your in error, there is a market but you must first learn how to prepare it, what wood is suitable! Most trees are not suitable but to one rare trunk limbless without too much twist can make you money my friend. It must be sealed and stored proper but if care is taken a good trunk can produce several hundred to a thousand dollars. Don't take my word for it research it!

So, since I'm in error, why don't you educate me. What wood are we "preparing", hedge or walnut? How about red oak? I've got several hundred board feet of that, fresh off the mill, drying in the cellar. How about cherry? Got a few hundred board feet of that down there as well. Cedar? yep, got some of that. Walnut? Yep. I've got a real nice lived-edged mantle blank. Oh, wait. Maybe I need to do some research before all that wood ends up in the stove. :hmm3grin2orange:

Black locust: 2 standing, one down.

Thorns on young wood only, they drop off when 2 or 3 years old, short but sharp and sting/burn like a mutha.

Looking for a closeup of a round. Best I can find right now. If I can't find one I'll take a pic tomorrow.

Progress-1.jpg

Note the deeply furrowed bark. Grain is tight, very much tighter than hedge.

For "funsies" cut some after dark to see the pretty sparks coming off your chain.

A better shot but still doesn't show the rings well;
