I had an MS 170 fall into my lap nearly a year ago. In the rebuild I noticed that every time the brake handle got reset that the top cover either lifted up or popped off. It wasn't anything that the sanding drum couldn't take care of. I ground a little radius into the cover near the brake handle above recoil starter. Problem solved.
Well, I wonder if this may have been part of the reason it died in the first place. These covers are really part of the filter assembly. Compromise that and its all down hill from there.

Just wondering if anyone else with a Stihl 017/018/MS170/MS180 series has experienced this??

I haven't had a issue. But it's a really bad design.
What do you want for a start of a homeowner line.

Maybe I expect more from German design.
Even if it was a paper weight it should be the most F-ing efficient paper weight.
Allowing dirt and debris into the induction system is a recipe for disaster whether its big or small, pro or home user.

Not so much as German design but a very efficient design to make money.good little saws I have a 017 that I ran on canola oil bacon grease is next.haven't had a chance to mess with it lately.it was already scored a tad bit so I said what the heck.

I have a 017 and it has no issues at all with the top cover.

As long as the locating pins are intact on both the saw body and the cover there are no issues at all. I fear this maybe the same affliction that effect those with flipp-capitis. There was a video of a child using the flippy-caps perhaps we can get one opening a 017018/MS170/MS180 o_O:rolleyes:

Look closer when you pull back the chain brake. It probably lifts up at least 3/8" when the Brake handle is pulled back

Nope I did read that was the issue and I went and had a look at mine. loads of clearance. Pic 1 is of it in the normal position. Pic 2 os the chain brake engaged and pic 3 chain brake lever pulled all the way back to disengage.

May be a slight difference between a 017 and 170 possibly? Maybe replacement issues or something?

you have to tilt the front of the top down first and get the 2 pins in the cover under the hooks on the front of the saw,,, if the 2 pins in the cover is broke off then it will never stay down
