My Quadra Fire 5700 had a joke of an ash removal system. There's was a plate in the center that had to be removed then a lever on the side of the stove actuated a trap door that opened to the ash pan. I used it once. I fabricated a fully welded and sealed ash compartment with ash pan, sealed door and an air control on the door. I cut a 12"×12" square in the stove floor. I made a grate out of 3/4" solid stock. I then welded the ash compartment fully to the bottom of the stove. I also made a new secondary air tube manifold that is sealed. I added an air control to the secondary air control. Got rid of the legs and its a pedestal stove now. This stove is a coal eating machine now. No more worries of built up coals.20191120_224939.jpg20191130_114425.jpg 20191124_163842.jpg 20191130_114525.jpg 20191204_205647.jpg 20191130_114303.jpg 20191206_130130.jpg

Yes I have been using it. I use the air on the ash door to give the coals a little air up through the grate. I'm amazed at how much heat I can get from the coals now. I used to get four inches or more of coals mixed with ash that would not disappear easily and my house would be cooling down as I waited for coals to slowly burn down. I have used the ash door to aid in lighting fires also but found this makes my glass black quickly. I can burn three weeks or more before needing to empty the ash pan. I do use the air control on the secondary air to the tubes. I close it while starting a fire and open it when I have a good fire established. It seems to add more air to the fire because some draft is lost to air entering the air tubes. The stove and chimney also heat faster with the secondary air supply closed.
